Read music: the basics

Notes on the staff.

5 min read

Reading music opens up a huge range of songs and makes learning faster.

Start with

  • The staff: five lines and four spaces
  • Treble clef note names: lines E G B D F, spaces F A C E
  • Bass clef for lower instruments and the piano's left hand
  • Ledger lines for notes above and below the staff

Guitar and ukulele

Many players start with chord charts and tab, which show where to put your fingers, then learn standard notation later.
